Piero joined BMC in late 2021. His background is in molecular and cell biology. He studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa for three years and completed his bachelor degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Pisa. He moved to France for his master degree in Life Sciences at the École normale supérieure de Lyon, where he attended courses on developmental biology, epigenetics, system biology. He pursued a PhD in cancer biology at the Cancer Research Center of Lyon, focusing on ribosome biogenesis and proposing it as a new target for anti-cancer treatment.
After his PhD, he went on with a short post-doc, investigating cell responses to ribosome biogenesis inhibitors in breast cancer. Finally, he gained some experience as a freelance scientific editor before joining BMC. He is now based in the Berlin office and upholds the values of open access.
